Outside Realism: Clifford Ross Photography
Challenging the fundamental foundations of photography, Clifford Ross uses modern technology to redefine the American landscape. Never before seen in Austin, Ross' epic photography exposes both the peaceful and the chaotic qualities that exist in nature. Clifford Ross photographs American landscapes with an eye for both the picturesque and the abstract.
- Hurricane series: His images of hurricanes freeze a breaking wave to capture a view of nature’s power impossible for the eye alone to perceive. The artist photographed the Atlantic coast during extreme weather conditions, revealing the distinct individuality of each wave.
- Mountain series: Art and invention both share a creative impulse and the commitment to achieve that vision. Since no camera existed to create the art Mount Sopris inspired in Clifford Ross, he built one. The R1 captures a level of detail previously unachieved.
- Mountain Redux series: Having mastered the mountain imagery, Ross next delved into the possibilities of the Mountain Redux series. Reacting against the challenges of realistically capturing nature within two dimensions, Ross went on to embrace the photograph as an object and a poetic representation of the landscape.
